18 killed in fighting over military camp in Yemen
SANAA: A Yemeni tribal leader says 18 tribesmen have been killed in fresh fighting between forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh and members of Yemen's most powerful tribal confederation, the Hashid.
The spreading tribal violence has raised fears that the country is being pushed to the brink of civil war after three months of mass protests against Saleh's rule.
Hashid Sheik Ali Saif says tribesmen seized control of two army camps about 80 kilometers northeast of the capital, Sanaa. He says 18 were killed taking the first, and none taking the second. It remains unclear if government soldiers died.
Friday's deaths raised the number of people killed to at least 127 in a week of battles between Saleh's forces and the Hashid.
