Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of the sinking of the Cheonan warship, which South Korea blames on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. And the South Korean navy is commemorating the incident by carrying out a large scale drill on all three sides of the peninsula.
Three South Korean naval fleets have mobilized patrol planes and frigates for training based on anti-surface, anti-submarine and anti-air warfare scenarios. The army and air force also held a joint artillery drill using K-9-self-propelled artillery, a 130-millimeter multiple launch rocket system, and F15 fighter jets in the northeast city of Pocheon.
The drills will continue through Sunday. Meanwhile, at least 20 anti-DPRK groups planned to air drop anti-Pyongyang leaflets in the DPRK.
The DPRK has warned of possible retaliation against the psychological warfare. Forty-six crew were killed when the Cheonan Navy ship sank off South Korea's east coast. The DPRK continues to deny any involvement.
