French defence minister meets Hamid Karzai on hostages

KABUL: President Hamid Karzai has betrothed the "full support" of Afghan authorities in efforts to free two French journalists held captive in the war-torn country, France's counterclaim minister pronounced upon Sunday.

After assembly with the Afghan leader, Alain Juppe pronounced heated discussions were receiving place as well as he hoped the pair, kidnapped by suspected Islamist insurgents upon Dec 30 last year, would be expelled soon.

"President Karzai positive me of the Afghan authorities' full support as well as all the assistance they can give us," Juppe said.

"I do not have the more precise timetable to give you. As you have pronounced multiform times before, discussions are intense."

Juppe pronounced he hoped "from the bottom of his heart" which the matter would be resolved soon, though he was incompetent to give the date.

"I do not want to give fake hope, though we am confident," he added.

Stephane Taponier as well as Herve Ghesquiere, the reporter as well as the cameraman for the state-owned television channel France 3, were abducted in an area northeast of Kabul abundant with anti-government insurgents.

Juppe arrived in Kabul upon Saturday for the Yuletide revisit to French troops deployed in Afghanistan.
