27 killed in Mexico pipeline explosion

At least twenty-seven people are dead after a pipeline explosion in a small community in the central Mexican state of Puebla.

The blast resulted in rivers of flaming crude flowing through streets. It occurred as thieves were trying to steal oil. A spark ignited the leaking crude, resulting in a fireball that wrecked cars and flattened homes. Authorities estimate the explosion and resulting spill could affect a 5-kilometer radius.

The principal explosion, followed by four minor blasts, injured at least 32 people and forced hundreds to flee. It also destroyed more than 30 houses. Local officials say rescuers continue to work at the scene, and the situation is under control.
